Estonian car tax calculator 2026

Work out the Estonian motor vehicle tax and registration fee for a car, van or motorcycle. Add several vehicles and see the year's total with the child reduction and the June and December payments.

Vehicles

Vehicle 1

Newer cars have their CO2 emissions measured by WLTP, older ones by NEDC. When the register has no figure, the law estimates it from power, kerb mass and age.
Line V.7 of the registration certificate, or the vehicle's data in e-MTA. With several figures, take the lowest.
Line F.1 of the registration certificate. A car pays for every kilogram above 2000 kg (a plug-in hybrid above 2200 kg, an electric car above 2400 kg).
Line G of the registration certificate. Needed when the register has no CO2 figure. For a van, together with the power and gross mass it shows whether the car rates apply.
Line P.2 of the registration certificate, in kilowatts. For a hybrid, the combustion engine's power.
Line P.1 of the registration certificate.
The day the vehicle was first registered anywhere, abroad too. Line B of the registration certificate.
Year and children
Children up to the day they turn 18 (inclusive) in your custody. Each child reduces the tax on cars and vans by up to 100 euros.

Enter the vehicle's details to see the year's tax, both payments and the registration fee.

How it works?

How the car tax calculator works

Add each vehicle: its type, fuel, CO2 emissions, gross mass and first registration date. You find them on the registration certificate or in e-MTA. The calculator works out each vehicle's annual tax under the Estonian Motor Vehicle Tax Act, adds them up, takes off the child reduction and splits the sum into the two payments. Each vehicle also shows the registration fee you would pay to register it today.

  • A car's annual tax is a 50-euro base part, a CO2 part and a mass part. From the fifth year the CO2 and mass parts are multiplied by an age coefficient.
  • A van has the base and CO2 parts, no mass part.
  • When the register has no CO2 figure, it is estimated from power, kerb mass and age, as the law says.

The calculation has been checked against the Tax and Customs Board's examples and the Transport Administration's registration fee calculator. The exact amount is on your tax notice in e-MTA.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Estonian car tax calculated?

A car's annual tax is a base part (50 euros), a CO2 part and a mass part. CO2 up to 117 g/km is free, 118–150 g/km costs 3 euros per gram, 151–200 g/km 3.5 euros and from 201 g/km 4 euros. The mass part is 0.40 euros for every kilogram of gross mass above 2000 kg, up to 400 euros. For a car at least five years old, the CO2 and mass parts are multiplied by an age coefficient.

When is the car tax paid?

The Tax and Customs Board sends the tax notice to e-MTA by 15 February. Half of the year's tax is due by 15 June and the other half by 15 December. When a vehicle is registered in Estonia for the first time during the year, the tax is counted for the days left in the year.

How much is the reduction for children?

For each minor child (up to the day they turn 18, inclusive) a parent's tax on cars and vans goes down by up to 100 euros a year. When the child has two parents, the reduction is split in half. If one parent's tax is smaller than their share, the rest goes to the other parent. The Tax and Customs Board applies it from the population register, there is nothing to apply for.

How does the vehicle's age change the tax?

The age counts from the first registration (abroad too) to 1 January of the tax year. The coefficient is 0.92 for a five-year-old car, 0.51 at ten years and 0.1 at 15 to 19 years. From 20 years it is 0 and you pay only the 50-euro base part. The coefficient never reduces the base part.

What is the registration fee and when is it paid?

The registration fee is paid once: when a vehicle is registered in Estonia for the first time, or when a vehicle registered in Estonia changes owner for the first time and the fee was never paid. The base part is 150 euros for a car and 300 euros for a van. The CO2 part counts from the first gram, and a car adds 2 euros for every kilogram above 2000 kg. The age coefficient is 0.87 for a one-year-old vehicle and 0.05 at 20 years. Under the law the rates rise in 2028.

What if the register has no CO2 figure?

Then the emissions are estimated with the law's formula: for a car, power in kilowatts × 0.29 + kerb mass × 0.07 + age in years × 4.92. A diesel car takes off 35 grams, a diesel hybrid without a plug 52 and a petrol hybrid without a plug 39. For a van the formula is power × 0.4 + kerb mass × 0.07 + age × 5.16, and a petrol engine adds 22 grams. The highest value counted is 350 g/km.

How much does an electric car or a hybrid pay?

An electric car pays the 50-euro base part and a mass part for every kilogram above 2400 kg (0.40 euros per kilogram, up to 440 euros). An electric van pays 30 euros a year. A plug-in hybrid's mass part starts at 2200 kg and its CO2 part is counted as for any car. A hybrid without a plug is taxed like a petrol or diesel car.

Do vans and motorcycles pay differently?

A van (N1) pays a 50-euro base part and a CO2 part that starts at 205 g/km, with no mass part. A van with more than 0.2 kW per kilogram of payload pays the car rates. Motorcycles, quads and small tractors pay 30 to 90 euros a year by engine capacity and age. Electric motorcycles and those 20 years or older pay nothing.
