Fuel cost calculator

Work out how much fuel a trip takes and what it costs, or your car's average consumption from a fill-up. The average price a litre comes from the European Commission's weekly fuel price bulletin.

Vehicles
Fuel
The car's average use per 100 km. Real use is often higher than the maker's figure: work out your own on the "Average consumption" tab.
The driver included. The fuel cost is split equally between everyone.
Leave it empty to use the chosen country's average. The pump's price is always more exact.

Enter the trip or the fill-up and you will see how much fuel it takes and what it costs.

Results are informational. Calculation is based on your input and public rules, official accounting may differ. For accuracy, confirm the final result if needed from the appropriate official source or specialist. See the terms of use.

How it works?

How the calculator works

Trip cost: the distance (doubled for a return trip) times the consumption per 100 km, divided by 100, gives the litres. The litres times the price a litre give the trip's cost. When the price is left empty, the chosen country's average for that fuel is used.

Average consumption: the litres filled divided by the kilometres driven, times 100. The cost comes from the same litres.

Money is rounded to the cent, the cost a kilometre to a tenth of a cent.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the fuel a trip needs?

Multiply the distance by the car's consumption per 100 km and divide by 100. A 300 km trip in a car that uses 6.5 l/100 km takes 19.5 litres. At 1.89 € a litre the trip costs about 36.86 €.

How do I work out my car's average consumption?

Fill the tank and reset the trip meter. Next time fill it up again: the litres you put in divided by the kilometres driven, times 100, is the average. For example 42 litres over 650 km is 6.46 l/100 km.

Where does the average fuel price come from?

From the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin. Every week the member states report the average price of petrol, diesel and LPG with taxes, and the Commission publishes them for all EU countries. The calculator fetches the new prices every day and shows under the result which day they are from. The pump's price may differ from the average: then enter your own.

Why is my real consumption higher than the maker's figure?

The WLTP figure is measured in a laboratory. Winter, a cold engine, town driving, high speed, a roof box and a load all add to it, so real consumption is often 10-20% higher. The most exact figure is your own car's average, which you can work out on the "Average consumption" tab.

How do I share the cost of a trip with passengers?

Enter the number of everyone in the car, the driver included, in "People in the car". The calculator splits the fuel cost equally. Wear on the car, insurance and parking are not in this price.
