Electricity bill calculator

Work out what electricity costs a year with network fees, taxes and VAT, and see whether the spot price or a fixed price would have been cheaper.

Energy
Your last 12 months' consumption is in the network company's self-service or on your bill. The buttons below are typical examples.
More at night means night hours weigh twice as much (electric heating, charging a car at night). Across the months the use is spread evenly.
Electricity contract
The contract's price per kWh with VAT.
The seller's charge on top of the spot price, with VAT. With a fixed contract it is used to compare with the spot price.
Network company and product

All prices with VAT, as on a bill or an offer.

Enter your yearly consumption and press Calculate.

Results are informational. Calculation is based on your input and public rules, official accounting may differ. For accuracy, confirm the final result if needed from the appropriate official source or specialist. See the terms of use.

How it works?

The calculator takes the last 12 complete months of Nord Pool spot prices in your area and spreads a year's consumption over the months by their days. Inside a month the consumption follows the profile you choose, so the spot energy price is weighted by your use.

For every month it adds the energy (spot or fixed price), the seller's margin and monthly fee, the network's energy charge and monthly fee, and the state's taxes and fees. VAT and taxes are those in force that month, so a change in the middle of the year lands where it belongs. Every line is rounded to the cent and the total comes from the rounded lines.

The network list carries each product's prices from its price list with the date they apply from. If your product is missing or your bill shows another price, choose "Other, from my bill" and type the numbers from the bill.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my electricity bill so much higher than the spot price?

The spot price is the energy only. The bill adds the seller's margin and monthly fee, the network company's charge and monthly fee, the state's taxes and fees (in Estonia the electricity excise and Elering's fees, in Finland the electricity tax) and VAT on all of it. With a small consumption the network and the state are often more than half of the bill.

Spot price or fixed price?

The calculator works out both with your consumption and the last 12 months' real prices. With a spot contract you see which fixed price would have tied, with a fixed one what the spot price would have cost. A past price does not tell the future, but it shows how large the difference usually is.

Where do I find my network charge and margin?

The network charge and the network's monthly fee are on the network company's bill or in its self-service, the margin and the seller's monthly fee in the seller's contract or price list. If your product is in the list, the calculator fills in the network charge itself. If your bill shows another number, choose "Other, from my bill".

How accurate is the result?

The spot prices are real, the consumption is an estimate: the calculator spreads it evenly over the months and over the hours by the profile you choose. A house with electric heating uses more in winter, when prices are higher, so its real spot price is somewhat higher.

How often is the data updated?

Spot prices arrive every day. Taxes and network fees come from official sources with the date they apply from, and a change enters the calculation from that day.
