Answer every question, then press the button.

Fifteen countries, four cities each, one of them the capital. The first five are warm-ups, the middle six are the ones people argue about, and the last four are for those who read atlases for fun.

It takes about four minutes. You see after each question whether you were right, and at the end you get a result page you can share.

Possible results

  • BeginnerYou know the famous cities, and that is exactly what this quiz was built to exploit.
  • TravellerYou know the capitals most people get wrong, and only the obscure ones stopped you.
  • GeographerYou know capitals that most atlases print in small type.

How this quiz works

The 15 questions were written by the Kahur Quiz editors and fact-checked against official government and national statistics sources for each country, as of 2026. Where a country has more than one capital in practice, the question says which one it means: Burundi's political capital is Gitega, Sri Lanka's official capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, and Côte d'Ivoire's official capital is Yamoussoukro. Switzerland has no legally designated capital, but Bern is the seat of the federal government and is universally treated as the capital.

Each correct answer scores one point, for a maximum of 15: 0–5 Beginner, 6–10 Traveller, 11–15 Geographer. The answer options are shuffled every time the quiz loads, so the position of the correct answer tells you nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Canberra the capital of Australia and not Sydney?

When Australia federated in 1901, Sydney and Melbourne both wanted to be the capital. The compromise was to build a new city between them. Canberra was founded in 1913 and parliament moved there in 1927.

Is Istanbul the capital of Turkey?

No. Istanbul is Turkey's largest city and was the Ottoman capital, but when the republic was founded in 1923 the government was placed in Ankara, and it has stayed there since.

Did Kazakhstan rename its capital?

Yes, twice. Astana was renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019 after the former president, and the name was changed back to Astana in September 2022. Almaty was the capital until 1997.
