How it works?

RPM (Revenue Per Mille) is how much a publisher earns per 1,000 views or page views. CPM (Cost Per Mille) is what an advertiser pays per 1,000 impressions. Both use the same formula — the difference is whose perspective you're using.

Formula: Earnings = (Views ÷ 1,000) × RPM
Rearranged: RPM = (Earnings ÷ Views) × 1,000
Views needed = (Target earnings ÷ RPM) × 1,000

On YouTube, RPM is lower than CPM because it reflects what the creator actually receives after YouTube's 45% revenue share. For example, a $10 CPM typically results in roughly $4–5 RPM for the creator, depending on ad formats served.

Frequently asked questions

What is RPM and how is it different from CPM?
CPM (Cost Per Mille) is the amount advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM (Revenue Per Mille) is the amount a publisher or creator earns per 1,000 views or page views, after the platform takes its cut. On YouTube, creators keep roughly 55% of ad revenue, so RPM is typically lower than CPM.
What is a good RPM on YouTube?
YouTube RPM varies widely by niche, audience location, and season. General content averages $2–$5 RPM, while high-value niches like personal finance, business, or technology can reach $10–$30 or more. Gaming and entertainment tend to be lower ($1–$3). Q4 (October–December) is typically the highest RPM period due to increased advertiser spending.
Why does my RPM fluctuate?
RPM changes based on advertiser demand, seasonality, your audience's country (US, UK, and Australia typically have higher ad rates), video topic, ad formats enabled, and your channel's overall health. It is normal for RPM to dip at the start of the year (January) and peak in Q4.
How many views do I need to make $1,000?
It depends on your RPM. At a $4 RPM you need 250,000 views; at $10 RPM you need 100,000 views; at $2 RPM you need 500,000 views. Use the 'Views Needed' tab to calculate this for your own RPM.
Does RPM include all revenue sources?
On YouTube, RPM includes all revenue sources counted in YouTube Analytics: ads, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and YouTube Premium revenue — divided by total views. Ad-only CPM only reflects display and video ad revenue. Always check which metric your analytics dashboard is reporting.
